Facility Employees: 163
In Business Since: 1929
Number of Locations: Six
DRP Programs: Ten

Combined Production Space: 100,000 square feet

Nearly 90 years ago, two brothers, Noel and Clem Church, established Church Brothers Collision Repair. Since then, the business has grown to include six locations in Indianapolis, IN.
“We have a culture of being a family and that’s the way we want to keep it,” said Ted McClintic, the president of Church Brothers since 2002. “Our goal is two-fold: take good care of customers and repair their cars correctly.”

McClintic estimates the privately-held MSO repairs about 10,500 cars a year. With that volume of vehicles coming through their shops, it is especially important to have the latest and best technology, such as the Pro Spot i5 Smart Welders that they have used for the last year.

In 2015, the company began working toward becoming ProFirst Certified with Honda. “Honda opened our eyes to all of the changes that are happening in the industry and all the things we need to do differently when repairing cars,” said McClintic, who has worked at the company for 25 years.

Church Brothers found that their current equipment didn’t meet some of Honda’s specifications to repair vehicles, so they began researching other options. In addition to conducting research over the Internet, they set up demos to find out which welders on the market met Honda’s requirements as well as what would be a good fit for their technicians. “The equipment is only as good as what the technicians are willing to use,” said Greg Gambrel, manager of technical processes and equipment.

Allen Haulk, a metal/frame technician at the Church Brothers Castleton location, installing a rear body panel with the Pro Spot welder.

Gambrel began working for Church Brothers in 1985 as a technician. In 1997, he left the company and became a high school career technical teacher. He also had a seat on the I-CAR Education Foundation board. After a decade, he returned to work at Church Brothers and said he currently helps drive the change of continuous learning at the company. “With the tsunami of change we are dealing with on vehicles, it’s important to keep our technicians aware of advances and changes in the industry,” said Gambrel.

As an I-CAR instructor, Gambrel was already familiar with Pro Spot welders, which are often used in I-CAR classes. “We were impressed with the Pro Spot demo,” said Gambrel. “The i5 Smart Welder was easy to use and the technicians were in favor of purchasing it.”

Gambrel said one of the main concerns buying new equipment was if the process was updatable so they wouldn’t find themselves in a position of owning equipment that wasn’t relevant with the introduction of new vehicles and materials.

“Because we were going to make a big investment with six stores, we wanted to make sure we were getting our money’s worth out of the equipment,” he said.

Gambrel said they were they were very impressed with Pro Spot’s products and Church Brothers purchased six i5 Smart Welders for each of their locations. “Dollar for dollar, we found there was nothing else on the market available that was comparable to the i5,” he said.

Gambrel worked with the Pro Spot rep, Bill Montville, owner of Collision Correction in Hilliard, Ohio, to train the technicians. “He must be Superman, because whenever we have an issue or questions, he’s Johnny-on-the-spot,” said Gambrel. “He is always here helping us.”

Church Brothers purchased six i5 Pro Spot Smart Welders for each of their body shop locations.

Pro Spot manufactures all their resistance spot welding equipment in the United States out of their Carlsbad, CA, headquarters. Established in 1986, the company owns an onsite machine shop, a research and development department, a fabrication facility and production lines for the various welders.

“We would absolutely recommend Pro Spot equipment,” said Gambrel. “It’s user-friendly and there is no question about the quality of the weld on the vehicles.”

“When that piece of equipment is used, it gives everyone the confidence that we’re fixing cars correctly,” added McClintic.

One feature that sets the i5 apart from other welders is the ability for technicians to access OEM requirements within the system. Not only does this help improve cycle time, but McClintic said it is important when repairing vehicles so technicians can identify what needs to be done on every single car they are welding.

The i5 also allows technicians to print out documentation about the number of welds done on every vehicle. This enables the shops to track usage of the equipment constantly.

When they aren’t repairing vehicles, giving back to the community is also an important priority for Church Brothers. Throughout the year, the company supports numerous organizations such as the Concord Center, The Gary Dudley Memorial Scholarship Foundation, ICAN, Wish for Heroes and many others.

“Church Brothers has been blessed over the years with thousands of loyal collision repair customers who have trusted us,” said McClintic. “I feel like it’s our responsibility to give back in some way.” Whether that’s through repairing cars properly with equipment such as the Pro Spot i5 welders or donating time and money for fundraising events, he said Church Brothers Collision Repair is committed to helping its customers and the community.

Customer Feedback: Mountain View Auto- Wayne, NJ

    Friday, August 25, 2017

With 34 employees repairing an average of 232 vehicles monthly at its two facilities, Mountain View Auto Body in Wayne, NJ knows it’s important to make the most of its 24,000 square feet of production space, where it also offers mechanical services, towing and storage for non-DRP customers. One way the shop achieves this is by using equipment from Pro Spot.

Body shop manager Mike Daniel shared, “The first product we purchased from Pro Spot was an i5 Smart Spot Welder in 2013, and we haven’t looked back. The products are user-friendly, more than capable of completing the task at hand, and competitively priced.”

In the years since acquiring the i5, Mountain View has also purchased two i4 Spot Welders, two SP-5 three-torch Smart MIGs, and an AL-5 Aluminum Dent Repair Station with fume extraction, in addition to other products. According to Daniel, “From Pro Spot’s Dustless Sanding System to the PR-5 Rivet Gun to our Aluminum Station, our technicians have more time to keep their hands on the car. Running around cleaning the shop or fumbling with multiple welders to get a job done became a thing of the past. Everything from Pro Spot was built with the shop in mind. Multiple torches on the SP-5 with the capability of quickly switching from aluminum to silicon bronze to steel, from MIG to TIG, give the tech valuable time back to truly diagnose and complete a repair properly, knowing they have the right tools.”

Using Pro Spot’s equipment has improved cycle time, CSI and repair quality at Mountain View Auto Body, plus the products required very little training, allowing technicians to focus on repairs.
“The ease and use of Pro Spot’s products, especially welders and dust-free Sanders, have drastically reduced our cycle time and increased our CSI as well as increasing repair quality,” Daniel shared.

“Without the use of Pro Spot’s machines, I don’t think we’d be able to reach our outstanding touch time of 7.2 hours per vehicle on average for our largest DRP. “Pro Spot’s products are priced fairly, easy to use and quick to implement, so the break-even point is very quick. Additionally, the technicians can be trained to use the product within a day, using them on vehicles within hours. Implementation of the products was seamless with little-to-no learning curve. Our techs love Pro Spot—whenever they see the Pro Spot delivery van, they know they’re getting a tool that will make their job a little easier.”

Of course, every busy shop knows it’s bound to experience maintenance issues with frequently used
equipment, but Pro Spot’s customer service department excels at providing quick solutions. “Nothing hurts a shop more than downtime without a particular piece of equipment, but this is what truly sets Pro Spot apart,” Daniel said. “One single call is usually all it takes to get a trained tech to the shop within a reasonable amount of time. Once onsite, they can usually determine the issue fairly quickly, and often have the answer on the truck.”

"As part of our Craftsman Collision 2017 annual manager’s conference, we visited the Pro Spot plant in Carlsbad California. All of our Craftsman Collision locations are equipped with i4 and i5 resistance welders, SP-2 MIG Brazing, Aluminum MIG welding and high strength MAG welding. We also have the full aluminum Ford F-150 setup in multiple locations. Our team was extremely excited to see how our equipment is constructed and assembled and the new products being sold. The managers were able to see the innovation and quality built into the products to add confidence to our operations and quality of repair," said Rick Hatswell, Craftsman Collision Chief Operating Officer.

"On the tour they were able to see how we make our products from start to finish. They saw where engineering designs the latest Pro Spot products, the machine shop and sheet metal shops that create the parts from scratch, all the way to final testing, shipping & training", explained Ashley Olsson, Pro Spot Director of Communications.

    i5 Ford Europe OEM Approval

    Monday, March 27, 2017

Pro Spot's i5 SMART Spot Welder has been approved by Ford Europe!

The i5 is designed to handle all new ultra high strength steels including Boron. The operator can choose between two different modes AUTO and MANUAL for the two-sided spot welding.

Take a closer look at the i5 features:

SMART: Auto Mode – The SMART Auto mode the i5 measures metal thickness automatically using the latest optical technology. The i5 then senses the metals to be welded from a pre-delivered current to determine the type of metal. Based on the thickness and resistance feedback data the i5 delivers the correct weld power every time regard- less of type of metal, thickness or corrosion protection between the metals.

Double-Acting Spot Welding Gun – This great feature of the i5 spot gun allows the operator to reach over common (but hard to get to) weld areas with ease. Areas such as rear body panels, roof panels and radiator supports. Just push the Press to SPREAD top switch and the gun pneumatically spreads the tips apart to reach over the wide areas. Welders without this feature have to have the arm unbolted and physically moved. With the i5 no need to let go of your grip just push the button.

Welding Amperage –The i5 features a new medium frequency trans-gun capable of delivering 14,500A with 1,243 lbs (565 daN) of electrode force.

Upgradable – Keep the i5 up to date with the latest software. Update to the latest vehicle specs and keep the i5 ready for any job. Data can be uploaded and downloaded to the i5 via USB. No flash cards required.

Liquid Cooled – The same versatility and ease of use that Pro Spot has made a standard in the industry, but with the added functionality of a 5 gal. (20L) radiator looped cooling system all the way to the weld caps.
