TECH TIP: Proper Storage For Aluminum Wire Affects Weld Quality and Wire Longevity

This Week's Tech Tip Reveals How Proper Storage For Aluminum Wire Affects Weld Quality and Wire Longevity...

WARNING:
ALUMINUM WIRE WILL GO BAD IF IT IS NOT STORED PROPERLY, REGARDLESS OF HOW LITTLE IT IS BEING USED.

It's hard to deny the impact that Aluminum is making on today's collision repair industry...

In recent years, OEM'S have grown more and more competitive when it comes to meeting Cafe standards for fuel economy. This competition challenges the abilities of industry professionals in how they properly repair, weld and deal with Aluminum in their shops.

For many shops, Aluminum welding has become the norm for day-to-day production. However, there are still shops who may not be as familiar with Aluminum as they are with steel.

Regardless of whether or not you're an Aluminum expert, it is imperative that you remember to store your Aluminum wires when they are not being used.

It matters because...
  1. Aluminum oxidizes rapidly. This can cause issues with weld quality and overall strength of repair.
  2. When oxidation forms on the Aluminum wire, it disrupts the arc and makes it nearly impossible to maintain it.

REMEMBER:
Properly storing your wires should not be considered an afterthought. When this step gets overlooked in the shop, its almost always the welder who takes the blame for the issue..

Proper Storage When not In Use:
When the Aluminum welding wire is not in use, it should be removed from both the welder and torch. Once removed storing in either a zip lock freezer bag, or wrapping in cellophane similar to how a new spool would come is the best option. When wire is stored properly Oxidation is less likely to form on the wire making for better weld quality, less chance of contamination, and longer lasting wire

Jaguar Land Rover & More Aluminum

Jaguar Land Rover embraces aluminum -- again

By CRM staff
Atlanta, Georgia -- August 7, 2018 -- The British engineers at Jaguar Land Rover will be making some changes to the OEM's vehicles in the coming years, starting with the the introduction of a fully aluminum modular platform to be available in four models by 2021, and all of the brands vehicles the next year.
The monumental shift to aluminium is the harbinger of even more dramatic changes to the OEM's vehicles. By 2024, all models will have phased out the classic V-8 engine, replaced with inline-three and six engines. Hybrid models and electric turbocharging is also expected to be available starting with the 2024 model year.
While it may sound like the OEM is making some uncharacteristic concessions to the modern day, the use of aluminum - or aluminium as the brand's engineers prefer - was actually pioneered by Jaguar in the 1940s. During the Second World War. With much of Britain's steel earmarked for military use, the manufacturer turned to aluminum to construct its vehicle's panels.

TECH TIP: Quick Setup NP-3

In the collision repair industry technicians are constantly moving around because of heavy competition, with this comes a training lapse when people leave. Plastic repair is a huge profit center for the collision industry. If metal repair is "gravy", why should plastic repair be looked at differently?
  • Type of plastic being repaired (PPO, TPO, RIGID, SEMI RIGID)
  • Thickness of the plastic
  • Type of repair being performed (crack, tear, tab repair
Watch this video for more on the NP-3
